The heart of many of these conversations is the same: IT leaders don’t want to leave VMware. They were happy with it and they’d built their infrastructure assuming it would be in their stack forever.
But rising costs, changing licensing models, and vanishing support have forced their hand. Now they’re staring down the prospect of a hypervisor migration and for the first time are seriously scoping specs for providers like Nutanix, Proxmox, and Hyper-V.
One misconception keeps coming up: that Hyper-V can’t do disaster recovery.
The reality is that the Hyper-V of today offers enterprise-grade DR features and functions.
In this piece, I’ll walk you through what those features are, how they compare with VMware’s offerings, and how we typically approach BC/DR setups that involve Hyper-V. How Does Hyper-V Disaster Recovery Stack Up to VMware?

For both platforms, the core primitives are built in, but enterprise-grade DR – low-RPO replication, orchestrated failover, ransomware recovery – is added with software like Veeam or Zerto regardless of hypervisor.
The main difference when migrating from VMware isn’t DR capability but rather cost and vendor lock-in. Migrating from VMware means shedding its high licensing cost while keeping a robust DR software layer on top.
The high-level takeaway here is that Hyper-V has disaster recovery capabilities that are appropriate for mature, enterprise-grade environments. In fact, Hyper-V’s biggest shortcoming lies not in its technical capabilities but in its unfamiliarity.
Because VMware has been the de facto leader in its space for so long, most IT professionals just don’t have the experience necessary to evaluate alternatives. They likely have limited experience with other environments, and so it’s almost impossible to confidently assess whether and to where a migration might make sense.

At a high level, the questions we work to answer include these:
- Do you have the ability to spin up your resources to what they looked like before your systems were breached?
- Are you able to run production systems without having to interact with bad actors?
- Does your BC/DR system let you do forensics to understand what happened in the event of a breach? (If your current system requires you to delete all production data in the event of a breach, the answer is no.)
