No, the short answer is QuickBooks Desktop is not going away in 2026, and there aren’t any plans for it to disappear in the years to follow. Which begs a second question: Why does everyone think QuickBooks is being discontinued?

All the confusion seems to be on purpose. Intuit has historically deprecated software on a three-year cycle, setting QuickBooks Desktop 2024 for termination in May, 2027. Instead, businesses were encouraged to switch to QuickBooks Online, a pay-per-month, cloud-based program.

QuickBooks Desktop vs. QuickBooks Online

Features in QuickBooks Desktop That Don’t Exist in QuickBooks Online

QuickBooks Online isn’t hiding something from you — some capabilities are just not there.

Intuit has since changed course.

After much understandable uproar, Intuit removed the sunset date for QuickBooks Desktop from their site, saying instead that the company will be moving away from the traditional three-year product lifecycle. This means that they won’t be releasing a replacement for the 2024 apps, but that they will continue to provide support, product updates, security patches, tax-law compliance updates, and feature enhancements for the desktop platform.

It’s great news for businesses seeking breathing room, but it shouldn’t necessarily stop the conversation about how best to manage your company’s accounting software.

OK, so QuickBooks Desktop isn’t being discontinued. What’s happening?

If you currently own a 2024 version of QuickBooks Desktop, you can stay where you are — Intuit is now supporting it for the foreseeable future.

The same can’t be said for businesses running on an older version of QuickBooks Desktop. As of May 31, 2026, Intuit is no longer supporting QuickBooks Desktop 2023 or earlier. Payroll, payments, backups, and live bank feeds have all stopped working, and Intuit no longer provides support or security updates for pre-2024 versions. It’s technically still usable — the software will continue to function — but all data has to be uploaded manually, and security will continue to decline without patches. In all but the most extreme cases, it’s not worth the risk.

If you’re on an older version of QuickBooks Desktop and want to upgrade to 2024, that’s unfortunately also a dead end. In 2024, Intuit stopped selling new U.S. subscriptions for QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus, and Enhanced Payroll services. Existing subscribers can still renew their licenses, but new subscribers can only choose between QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise. More on those below.

What are the options for QuickBooks Desktop alternatives?

There are a few options for upgrading your QuickBooks if your version is discontinued in the future.

Keep QuickBooks Desktop

The first option is a perennial favorite — do nothing. If your current setup is working for you, you do not have to change. Intuit would like very much for you to move to QuickBooks Enterprise or QuickBooks Online, but anyone with the 2024 version of QuickBooks Desktop can stay indefinitely, with Intuit’s support.

If you’re self-hosting QuickBooks Desktop, you can also improve your workspace without migrating your data by choosing managed hosting for QuickBooks Desktop. Companies like Summit take on the burden of keeping servers running and data protected for accounting firms all over the world. We’ll take your existing application and move it to our own data centers, where we can monitor it 24/7. You get the ease of a cloud-based tool, without needing a full in-house IT team to keep virtual desktops running.

Migrate to QuickBooks Enterprise

For businesses that are starting to outgrow QuickBooks Desktop, QuickBooks Enterprise may be the answer. It has the most robust feature set of any Desktop product, but it comes at a higher price. Enterprise is sold in Silver, Gold, and Platinum editions (Diamond is also available, but only directly from Intuit), with monthly or annual billing. For a single user, Silver lists at $179 a month or $1,873 a year, and Platinum lists at $266 a month or $2,717 a year. Choosing annual billing saves about $275 a year on Silver and $475 on Platinum, and first-year discounts of 20% are often available.

Intuit describes Enterprise as its flagship Desktop product designed for businesses that need more advanced accounting, inventory, reporting, payroll, multi-location, and other capabilities.

For some companies, moving from another Desktop product to Enterprise can be a smaller transition than moving to an entirely different accounting platform. Summit can manage all the elements of QuickBooks hosting so your business can focus on your work.

If you do go the route of QuickBooks Enterprise, you also have to make the decision between self-hosting or managed hosting. If you’re already in the server business, self-hosting may make sense. If you’re in pretty much any other business, however, managed hosting will save you the headache of hiring for technical roles and of relying on just a few people to keep business running.

Move to QuickBooks Online

Small businesses that want browser-based access and don’t need the full functionality of a Desktop product can move straight to QuickBooks Online. That’s the path Intuit is pushing, even if it’s far from the only path. QuickBooks Online users pay a monthly fee, access the application through their browser, and never think about how their accounting software is architected ever again.

The only caveat here is to make sure QuickBooks Online can do everything that you need it to do. QuickBooks Online can be great for solopreneurs and businesses where only one or two users need to access the financial data. It’s not, however, a full-featured replacement for QuickBooks Desktop.

Move to Another Accounting Platform like Sage

Before the recent reversal, many businesses were using QuickBooks’ announcement as an opportunity to assess the broader accounting software options. If you’re already going to manage through change, it can make sense to evaluate all the alternatives. Moving from Desktop to Online might not be that much more complicated than moving to a new vendor.

Summit supports all options and offers managed Sage cloud hosting for those looking to make a potentially bigger move.

Next Steps for Businesses Running on QuickBooks Desktop

Thankfully, the businesses that depend on QuickBooks Desktop to run their books can take a bit of a breath. Intuit has rolled back the plans to stop supporting it in the near term. That doesn’t mean, however, that they won’t revisit discontinuing the software in the future.

Even if you’re staying on QuickBooks Desktop, it’s worth thinking through the contingencies. Best-case scenario, you find an opportunity to improve operations and/or reduce expenses. Worst-case scenario, you confirm you’re in the right spot.

The deadlines, specifications, and compatibilities can be a bit overwhelming, and sometimes they’re purposefully opaque. If you need help navigating your next move, talk to an expert at Summit about fully managed QuickBooks hosting and other options.

Is QuickBooks Desktop going away in 2026? FAQs

Is QuickBooks Desktop discontinued?

No. Intuit continues to support QuickBooks Desktop 2024, though only for people who bought licenses prior to September 2024. Existing subscribers will be able to renew their licenses, but no new licenses will be sold.

Will QuickBooks Desktop 2024 stop working in May 2027?

No. Intuit has reversed the planned May 2027 sunset date for QuickBooks Desktop 2024, saying it is moving away from its previous three-year software lifecycle. That does not mean QuickBooks won’t decide to stop supporting it going forward.

Can I still use QuickBooks Desktop 2024?

Yes. Intuit says QuickBooks Desktop 2024 will continue to receive product updates, security patches, tax-law compliance updates, and feature enhancements. Users should accept periodic in-product updates to keep the software current.

What happens when my version of QuickBooks Desktop is discontinued?

The software may continue to operate, but certain features will stop working. This can include payroll, payments, online banking, online backup, technical support, and other connected services. Discontinued versions also stop receiving critical security updates.

Do I have to move from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online?

No. QuickBooks Online is one option, but businesses can continue to stay with Desktop 2024, either self-hosting or using a managed hosting service. Other options include moving to QuickBooks Enterprise or evaluating another accounting platform.

Should I move from QuickBooks Desktop to Sage?

That depends on your business requirements. If you’re already evaluating a major accounting software change, it’s reasonable to compare QuickBooks and Sage based on the features, workflows, integrations, users, reporting, and other requirements that matter to your business.

What should I do if I’m still using an older version of QuickBooks Desktop?

At this point, Intuit has stopped support for all versions of QuickBooks Desktop before 2024. While you may still be using the software, you’re likely having to resort to several onerous workarounds. This is also increasingly a business risk, as you get further from the date of your last software security update. Consider whether migrating to QuickBooks Enterprise or Online, or switching accounting platforms, makes the most sense.
