VMware has been a cornerstone of enterprise IT for years. But since Broadcom’s acquisition, many organizations have found themselves reevaluating their virtualization strategy. Rising costs, licensing changes, and uncertainty around VMware’s long-term direction have prompted a simple question:

What’s the best path forward?

We explored this question in our recent webinar with Veeam, where we discussed how IT teams can evaluate VMware alternatives while minimizing disruption to the environments and workflows they already depend on.

If you couldn’t join us live, here’s a recap of the conversation.

Why Organizations Are Reassessing VMware

One of the biggest themes throughout the discussion was that organizations are not necessarily looking for change. They’re looking for stability.

For many IT teams, the challenge isn’t finding a new virtualization platform. It’s finding one that delivers predictable costs, familiar management experiences, and a migration path that doesn’t introduce unnecessary risk.

As VMware customers navigate licensing changes and budget pressures, many are taking a closer look at alternatives that align with their existing Microsoft investments and operational processes.

What IT Teams Should Evaluate Before Making a Move

Moving away from VMware is about more than selecting a new hypervisor.

During the webinar, we discussed several areas IT leaders should assess before making a decision:

  • Long-term licensing and operational costs
  • Migration complexity and workload compatibility
  • Backup and disaster recovery readiness
  • Day-to-day management and administration requirements
  • Staff training and existing skill sets
  • Future scalability and flexibility

A successful transition starts with understanding how a potential alternative fits into the broader IT environment, not just how it compares feature-for-feature.

Why Hyper-V Continues to Be Part of the Conversation

Microsoft Hyper-V was a major topic throughout the session.

For organizations already invested in the Microsoft ecosystem, Hyper-V offers a familiar virtualization platform that integrates naturally with existing tools, processes, and expertise. We discussed how both private cloud and multi-tenant cloud environments built on Hyper-V can provide a practical migration path while reducing the operational learning curve.

The conversation focused on maintaining continuity for IT teams rather than forcing a complete shift in how environments are managed.

Backup and Recovery Planning Should Start Early

Another key takeaway was the importance of involving backup and disaster recovery planning early in the evaluation process.

Migration projects often focus on infrastructure first and protection second. The webinar highlighted why backup architecture, workload conversion planning, and recovery objectives should be considered from the beginning.

Addressing these areas early can help organizations avoid surprises later in the migration process and maintain business continuity throughout the transition.

Modernizing Infrastructure Without Disrupting Operations

Every IT leader faces the same challenge: how do you modernize infrastructure while keeping the business running?

The discussion explored practical ways organizations can reduce risk during transitions, including phased migration approaches, careful workload assessment, and selecting technologies that align with existing operational workflows.

The goal is not simply to replace VMware. The goal is to build a sustainable virtualization strategy that supports future growth without creating unnecessary complexity.
